One of Sussex’s landmarks, the World’s End is a beautiful Sussex longhouse located next to Patching Lake.
Many of the names of villages in the County of Sussex end in "ing" which indicate their Saxon origins; "Ing" means "people of". Patching originated from "Paecci's people" (Paecci being a local Saxon chief or landowner). At this time, the village was known as Paeccingas but by the Domesday Survey in 1086. the name had corrupted to "Petchinges". The name "Patching" was settled by the 16th century and the village has been known by that name since that time.
The site has been an inn since 1765, though it was known as "Patching Pond House", as it lay by the village pond at the bottom of Fox Hill. By 1847 it had been renamed "The Horse and Groom". In 2002 it was refurbished and the name changed to "The World's End", in homage to the sea-farers of the past who feared sailing off the edge of the world.
We love dogs, as all good pubs should! Well-behaved dogs are welcome in our bar and outdoor areas. Wi-Fi access is free to all our guests (subject to availability).
